Tamil Class Dec,20th 2015

Tamil Jr. :
  This week we practiced for the presentation in the class. Kids all did well. We went in circle like a train and sang the Vowel song. Practiced it few times. Kids are very comfortable with the song well. Please have them practice at least couple of times in the holiday time so that they do not forget it.
     We also revised the letters and did a New year coloring page. The class then combined with intermediate as first graders has to go to Biksha.
         Keep them motivated by making them speak couple of sentences in Tamil every day. Many kids knows all the words. but is not confident in using them while talking. Though we encourage them in the class, it would work more if it continues in the house too.

Tamil Intermediate:
In the intermediate class, we did the new year coloring page and then practiced the song. We listened to the song in youtube couple of times and sang them couple of times. Most of the kids got it. Please refer to the last week blogspot for the video and lyrics and have them practice during the holidays. 
  Practice writing and song at least couple of times during the holidays so that they do not forget the lessons. 
Then we went to the Jr. room to do a combined practice. This week our star student is Harish. He talked on a topic "About me" and also sang the song "Dosai amma Dosai". He talked very well in tamil. 
   Very good job Harish. You have inspired other kids too in the class.
Then , couple of kids came forward and talked about their favorite.
We will work on more talking every week. Intermediate will work on writing too. For now , most of the kids can write the consonant sound. The rest of the kids will finish the consonant sound in a class or 2. Then we will work on secondary letters.
    Every week each child in the class will get a turn to be star student of the week. Star student for the next class has been informed. It will go in the alphabetical order of their first name.

Tamil Class - Jr and Intermediate - Dec 13th 2015

Tamil Jr.:
    Tamil jr. had minimal strength this week. 
Siva and Vidya made them write Vowels (உயிரெழுத்து ) fully .
அ ,ஆ  - ஔ  and Aayutha ezhuthu(ஃ) .

Siva went through colors with the kids. 

Then we did the most fun part - அ ,ஆ, இ,ஈ   song with all the little children. Everyone individually sang so well. They will sing this song for  the presentation. Here are the lyrics for the parents to practice at home too.

Tamil Intermediate: 
  In the intermediate, We reviewed our consonant sounds. With couple of more practice we will be very comfortable with the consonant sounds. Kids were made to write many of the letters without seeing and also in random order. They would have brought that paper home. check it. we will work on the similar pattern in future too as we want the kids to understand the letters and their sound. 
   Kids who missed few classes were made to write the letters 3 times with saying them. Please do the same in the home. 
  We then listen to and learn the consonant song. The song link and the lyrics are given below. We sang this couple of time. Not all kids got it. please encourage your child to practice this at home too. We will be singing this song in the presentation.
   Home work:
         Practice consonant letters in writting and practice the song for singing. We will be work on the song next class.

Tamil class Dec 6,2015

 Tamil Junior:
We started with learning colors. We saw the names of the colors in Tamil and English, we did this a couple times.
We then learned to write the letter O and Oo.

The preschool children traced the vowels and others are able to write A Aa till O Oo.
The star child- Anusri had thirukkural to tell, but couldn't get to it due to time constraint. She will present her Thirukkural next class.

Homework- Please make the children practice the colors in Tamil.

Tamil Intermediate:
   We worked the full class in writing the consonant sounds. All kids are recommended to say the letter and write. Kids can see the letters and write or write all the letters without seeing in an order. If they are asked to write one specific letter, they have trouble identifying it. We worked very hard. We will be working more in the next class. 
Next class we will have dictation on the consonant sounds. Practice all the consonant sounds. We will be working on writing the Body parts in the next class. We will also be practicing for the Assembly presentation in January.

Homework:

• Practice all the consonant sounds.

Tami Jr. November 22nd 2015

 Today both classes worked separately. 

Uyir group:
   Learnt and practiced the body parts.  We also learnt the uses of each body parts in tamil. We played the "touch the body part". When shiva uncle say a body part in tamil , kids have to touch them in their body. It was a fun game. 
   Please review the numbers (1-10) and body parts at home too. 

Homework: Write all the vowel letters 2 times in the Tamil  notebook. Practice the numbers and body parts words. We will have quiz in the next class. Kids who can answer questions get to pick an extra prize from the prize box.

Mei group:
    Did you get to see the family books kids made in the last class!!!. It was a fun activity. We practiced writing numbers 1 to 10. Also had a dictation for numbers 1-6. kids who attended the previous class did a very good job. We also started the consonant song. Home work:

Star Student of the week. 

  Starting next class, We will be having Star student of the week. He or she will have to bring  an item from home and talk about it in the class. The child can also just come in with a topic to talk about like my favorite things, a family vacation etc. Child from uyir group will have to speak at least 2-3 sentences. Child from mei group will have to speak for 2-3 minutes. They get to choose an extra prize from the prize box. 
We will email the list. Please let us know if the child cannot make to that week's class. We would like all the kids to participate as this will be a good opportunity to improve the language skills

Two Classes:
    From next class, Mei group will be meeting in the class named "Tamil intermediate". Please look for the sign and come to those class. Thanks to Mahathi's Dad for offering to assist in the class. 
     Uyir group will continue in the Tamil Jr. Class.  Vidya and Shivakumar will run the Tamil Jr. Class. 

Tami Jr. November 15, 2015

   This week , We started with singing our vowel song. Then reviewed the number words in Tamil. Then continued to the  group activity. Good job to all kids who finished their homework. Remember, kids who does their homework gets extra sticker!!! to their sticker pager. There are few kids who achieved their 5 sticker mark and will get to pick a price from the treasure box next class. 
      Soon we will be possibly splitting into two class with Vidya Leading the vowel group and Sowmya leading the consonant group. We will be needing another teacher volunteer to assist us in the class. If any of you are interested let us know or contact the co-ordinators Kalpana tamu and Anu Raguraman

Vowel group:
Learned the numbers in the class. Each child is made to come to the board and say the numbers 1 to 10. Practice numbers 1 to 10 with them. They should be able to tell the Tamil word for each number next week. 

Consonant group:
   Kids are made to write the number words. Its a guided writing. They are learning the secondary letters with this process. We will continue to read the consonant sounds and write words simultaneously.  
   Home work will be practice writing numbers 1-6. There will be a test next class on those.

Student of the week: 
  Every class starting next, one student from each group will  be made student of the week. Student of the week will  talk in Tamil in the class (couple of sentence for uyir group and 2-3 min for mei group) about their favorite thing. They can also bring a toy or book or any stuff from their home and talk about it. The order will be email to the parents. If any of you did not receive any email from us, please let us know.

Homework:
   Homework is vital in language learning.It is one way to reinforce the lessons in the house too. If the students do not keep up with the homework, it is difficult for us to go further as they will keep forgetting the lessons and we will have to repeat the same thing again and again. We will not be able to go any further.  Please have your child work on their homework in the house. We promise not to give too many homework.

 This week kids were full of energy.  We were able to complete the planned lessons for the day.

Group A (Mei ezhuththu): 
    We practiced consonant sound and finished the lesson-2 (my family) activity in the textbook without help. They all did a good job.We played letter bingo with consonant letters. Kids had fun with the game. We then created the greeting card for the Diwali. Kids were taught to write the wishes on their own. Here are the homework for this week.

Tamil Jr. Class October 25, 2015

   Today we had a good class. Kids were focused and energetic.  We thank Mr. Sivakumar for volunteering to help us in the class. 

Group A:
     Kids reviewed the words page 2 and 3 in Tamil Book. Then, we had a quiz on the words. kids were able say the Tamil words for most of the words. Then we practiced writing the first 6 consonant sounds. 
  Homework: Practice the words in Lesson -1 and 2 in the text book, write the first 6 consonant sounds. Printout is given to the student. If the kids missed, Print it and have them finish the printout.

            

Group B:
    We practiced the Vowel sounds. Most of the kids came to the board and read the vowel letters aloud. Most of the kids got it. Only couple of them have trouble. With little bit more practice, all the kids can identify the letters.  Please continue to practice them at home too. Then we learnt to write the next two Vowel letters.  Kids did a good job in writing them.

Tamil Jr. October 11th 2015

Today we had a short class due to Back to Balavihar for Language classes we did not get much done. Thanks for all the parents who came in today. For those who missed it, do not worry, we have already sent you the information through our welcome letter. If you have any questions we will be happy to answer you in the next class or you can always email us. 

   As per the class today, We practiced the alphabet song as a class. Then went ahead with the group activity.
Group A: 
  We reviewed our home work. Many of them had done the homework. Good job for all those who made an effect. We learn the consonant sounds today and quickly reviewed the colors and number words by playing the tossing the cube game. Each child tossed the color cube to one another . They have to say a sentence with the color the cube landed in. The same way we played with number dice too. 
 All the children did a good job. 
Homework for this group is learn page 2,3 and 19 in their textbook. They will have a quiz next class. Winners get to pick a prize from the prize box!!!. We will also start writing the consonant sounds in the next class
 
Group B: 
    We continued the family words . We also did worksheets to practice writing the alphabets அ , ஆ  and alphabet sequence. We will work on writing the at least 2 letters in each class.  We will request parents to have the kids practice writing those letters in the house too.     Home work for next week is practice writing letters அ , ஆ . Saying the vowel sounds in the right order. kids who could say the vowel sounds in the right order and also identify the given vowel sound will get pick a prize from the prize box.  If time permits, we will play letter bingo game.

October, 4th 2015 -Tamil Jr. Class

        This week, We split the class into two groups. Group A handled by Sowmya and Group B by Vidya Aiyer. After individual group activities, We practiced the alphabet Song as a whole class. We will be learning this song for the next couple of weeks. our kids will sing this as one of the performances in the assembly sometimes during January. Our class will be working on two group system for rest of the year. Our goal is to graduate the group A kids to Senior in the following year (if the kids cooperate this year).

Group A (Kids who are done with vowel sounds): 

         We reviewed the vowel sounds. kids wrote the alphabets in their notebooks on their own.  We also worked on words with vowel beginning sounds. We started making the  vocabulary list section in the Tamil notebook. I asked the kids to start from the back of the notebook. Each page is assigned a letter and words beginning with that sound will be written in that page. We will continue to add the more words to the collections through out the year. By the end of the year, kids will be amazed at how many words they have learnt in Tamil.        In the next class, We will review the homework word list , Lesson -2 in the text book. Then, we will start on consonant sounds. 

Group B(New kids / Kids who do not know vowel sounds or any basics of Tamil): 

     We started vowel sounds. Kids worked on learning the vowel sounds and tried to trace them. We made kids repeat the vowel sounds for couple of times.We started Lesson-2. We read the books on relations. We will be working on Lesson -1 along with other lessons until each child is comfortable either saying and identifying them or Writing them.        Next class we will have activities to practice letter sounds and Letter sequences. We will be continue to learn the Lesson -2 (My Family).

Home work:

 Group A: 

         Group A kids will have to write the words that begins with vowels sounds in their vocabulary list sections. We are going to see who could bring in lots of words. Kids can write the Tamil words in English and we will eventually write them in Tamil.  Here are some sample shots. Also use the Textbook and their last year printouts as reference for words. 

Group B:

Practice Vowel sounds. They should be able to identify the letters and/ or put them in the correct order when asked to in the next class. Please print the following and have it in their folder for the next class.
