Tami Jr. Class 11/16/14

The class was split into two groups.
Group -1  was kids in Preschool thru kindergarten. Vidya iyer had the kids put the vowel letter stickers in order. It will in their  folder or their notebook. Use that to practice the e vowel sounds and letter sequence. By next class they should have learned to identify all the letters.
Group - 2 (The older kids) are made to write the vowel letters in their notebook. Most of the kids are able to do it. I have informed the respective parents for the kids who have little trouble. Please do practice the tracing of letters at home (like once a week..).

Both group are very well understanding of color and number. Each kid put the flash card image under each right color column. Then we counted how many images are there under each color. Every did an excellent job.
Then we split the class in to  4 groups under color names and did a vocabulary quiz. We asked the tamil word for all the vocabulary we did so far in class. Everyone (including the little ones) did a great job. It was a very narrow win for the "Manjal" team.
Awesome kids. Everybody needs a pat on their back.
We will be moving on to consonant for kids who got through writing  vowel on their own. Others will work on vowel for one more week.
Next class we will be working on more animal words. Then learn week days and words related to  day and time of day.
Our next class will be 12/07/14.
Until then their home work will  be speak  at least one word a day with their family in Tamil.

Most kids did note down, a few without notebooks couldn't do so. We went through a couple of times the relationship. Children participated very well in telling.

Lastly, the children were asked to write their names in tamil on the chalkboard. It was a nice session.
Next Balavihar on 16th November.  We have 2 weeks to practice all the vocabulary words we learned so far(refer to all the printout/document emailed so far). In the next class , there will be quiz to all the kids. Winning kid(s) will get a small prize!!! Kids will also be asked to write the vowel letters.

Tamil Jr. Class - 9/21/2014

We had few new members to our class this week. With more diverse range of age groups in the class, we will be little slow for next couple of weeks.I am still in the process of understanding each kid's ability to read, write, and speak the language. Here is what we did in our class.

  •    Today we worked on our vowel sounds and family member words in Tamil. Most of the students were given opportunity to come forward and read the vowels. We will continue this next week.
  •   We did a worksheet on "what comes before" each alphabet for the bigger kids (2nd grade and above). This worksheet is mainly to see if the kids can learn writing the alphabet by copying from the list of letters or by tracing the letter. We will be working on this next week.
  •    Smaller kids (Pre-k to grade 1) did "trace and count " worksheet. they traced all the  "அ " on the page and counted how many are there.
  •     Under vocabulary, we learnt family member names. All students are asked to say who live in their house. Some kids were able to say their family relation names (uncle, aunt, grandparents...) who live in India too. We encourage all kids to speak in tamil as much as possible in class.
  •     We translated the rhyme "Jony Jony Yes papa" into tamil.
  •     Today kids would have come home with their names written in tamil. Please save that or help the kid write their name in their tamil notebook so that they do not loose this sheet. This is mainly for them to be able to identify their names in tamil by the end of this year. We will be using this on every class to identify their name.

Kids need to bring back the worksheets. We will be working on them again next week.

I thank the parents and Grandparents who stayed with the kids in the class. They were great help while doing the worksheet in the class.

Next week, we will be working on the vowels sound more, color words,  and numbers if time permit.

Please make sure the kids have the following for their  Tamil class.

  • A Notebook
  • Pencil, eraser
  • Color pencil or crayon (No markers please)
  • Folder to keep the printouts.

Tamil Jr Sept 14 Class

Hari om  everyone,

I am very excited to teach Tamil Jr. this year at Balavihar. Our first day Tamil class went on fine. The first class is used to understand the kid’s knowledge level in Tamil. Kids tried to use as much Tamil words as possible to introduce themselves. Kids are introduced to vowels. They traced their name in Tamil and the first alphabet. Some kids are very comfortable writing them on their own and identifying the vowels. Few younger kids have little difficulty. That is perfectly fine. I will be working with them. We end the class with a story time. We hear the story and tried to comprehend them.

The real learning starts from next week. We have kids with various levels of knowledge and ages.  From next class, I will split the class into two groups based on age. I will be bringing in two types of worksheets so that kids can learn in their comfort level.
Also each child has to bring a notebook, pencil, color pencil(or crayon. no markers please) for the class.

Thank you,

Sowmya
