Tamil Junior: We worked on vowel sounds. kids were made to write all the vowel letters.
We did a joined the dots activity to review the vowel letter sequence.
In conversation, we learnt on greeting words. Please have them speak atleast 5 minutes every day in tamil at home, so that they will become comfortable with speaking. Homework: Test in writing all the vowel letters without looking in the book.
Tamil Intermediate:
In Tamil intermediate class, kids were asked to write the vowel sounds and the first 8 consonant sound with out looking in the book. Some of the kids can do it and some needed help.Please be sure that by next class they should come well prepared for the class with letters so that we can move further easily. We also did a oral practice of the full consonant sounds.
We also did the first 8 lines of Aaththichoodi.

We also worked on conversation. Whole class took turns asking the questions and answering each other.

Homework:
Kids should come well practiced in saying the full vowel and consonant letters.
Kids should be able to write 12 vowels and first 8 consonant sounds.
Sing the first 8 line of Aaththichoodi.
Come prepared with four sentence to talk about themself. (Their name, class, their favorite color, food,sport...., their parents/friends/sibling names....)
Practice the page 18 sight words. They will be making sentences with them in the next class.
In Tamil junior class, We reviewed the vowels. Did a couple of worksheets on vowels. Went through the first and second page of textbook. Review the text book first 2 pages in the textbook. Homework: second page of yellow book
Tamil Intermediate Class: This week we reviewed and practiced the weekdays and numbers. Students are ok with numbers one to ten . But need a little more practice in Weekdays. Please have them practice at home too. In writing, We practiced writing the first 8 consonant sounds (க் ,ங் ,ச் ,ஞ் ,ட் ,ண் ,த் ,ந் ). Have the kids write them 5 times in their notebook and come for next class. In song, we started learning Aaththichchoodi - (ஆத்திச்குடி). Kids will be performing this in assembly. Tamil class assembly presentation will be in Feb tentatively.We did the first four lines in the song. Practice them at Home. Here is the picture of what we covered in the class. We finished writing all vowels(அ - ஃ) and started the first page of our book. Homework: Review the first page of the book. Be ready to identify any letters and related objects on that page.
Tamil Intermediate:
We worked on the writing the next 4 letters in the consonant sound. Students were made to work on the tracing worksheet and then work on the writing , க் ,ங் ,ச் ,ஞ் ,ட் ,ண் ,த் ,ந் in their notebooks. Many kids did not have notebooks. Please remember to send in a notebook for tamil class separately. Students are made to write உயிரெழுத்து . We will continue to make them write some of past lessons once in every class so that they do not forget. So please keep revising in the house. We also reviewed on Number words, Weekdays. Home work for the next class - Please practice the first 8 consonant sounds , Number and weekdays. We will have a quiz on the numbers and weekdays. Winners get a price.
Today is the first full fledge day of learning.
We started with kids introducing themselves in Tamil.
We will be continuing to do so in future classes too. We will be insisting on kids speaking in tamil class to us.
Speaking: Kids learned to introduce themselves. We will working on speaking skills for the first 10 min in the class.
Reading:
Kids identified all the vowel sounds. We started learning to say the Consonant sounds.Class repeated for couple of times and then each students tried to say each letter sounds written on the board
Writing:
Kids wrote all the vowel sounds by themselves. We also did a missing letter activity with the vowel sound. We started learning the consonant sound. We repeated saying all the 18 letters. We learnt to write the first 4 letters.
Songs:
We did the kuvakuva vaaththu song (குவா குவா வாத்து). Please have them practice in the house come for the next class. Welcome to BBNJ Tamil class for the school year 2016-17. It was nice meeting every one today.
We have lots of new families joining us today. Since today was the open house, We introduced our self and talked about the curriculum for the class.
We will start the regular curriculum from the next class. We have shared the back to balavihar packet from google drive. Please have it as a reference. Make sure to get all required supplies. The list is given in the packet. If you have not received any email with google drive share, please contact us . We might have a wrong email address or missed your email in the list.
Our mode of teaching will be

Next class will be a assessment class. We will analyze the kids and filter them between Junior and Intermediate.

Tamil junior class worked on the consonant sounds. We reviewed the past lessons and worked on the consonant sounds. They are very familiar with all the letters. kids should be able to say them in right order and also identify the letters when
Homework: Have the kids practice the consonant sounds. Practice them saying the letters in right order. Also randomly show a letter and ask them to identify.
Kids who can say all the consonant sounds and identify the letters shown in the next class will get to pick a prize from the treasure box.
Tamil Intermediate:
In intermediate class, we practiced the secondary letters in உ sound, and we also learnt ஊ sound. We practiced writing the letters.
Homework: Practice both the letter sounds. Have them write 3 times in their notebook so that they are comfortable with the letters.
They will have their routine secondary letters tests for letters up to ஊ sound. Kids who can get all the letters correct get to pick a prize from the treasure box.
This week, both junior and intermediate class were held together as Sivakumar is unable to come.
Tamil Junior: We Practiced writing the vowel letters and then worked on vowel sound words from lesson 1. Kids did very well in writing. They are improving well. please practice talking to them in tamil at home too. Ask them to reply to you in tamil atleast for few sentences. This encouragement will help them . Homework: Practice the words from lesson -1. Kids should be able to say the word when looking at the picture or given the english word.
Tamil Intermediate: We practiced the past secondary sound letters and started on the next two sound. Kids brought home the test paper and homework for the week is specified on the test paper. Please do sign the paper.Also have the kids finish the homework. Kids also went home with a booklet and wordlist sheet. Read with the children so that they get familiarized with the words. They should bring them back to class so that we will practice in class too. We will continue this process for the next few weeks. Test, lesson , reading wordlist.
This week we reviewed the weekdays and started working on the lesson -7 (Action words). Kids had fun learning this lesson with action.
Kids were comfortable with the days lesson.
Please review them in the house and try to make them use it in their daily conversation whenever possible.
Attendance is important to keep up the learning. Please keep the absenteeism to minimal.

Practice writing the vowel sounds. Write the vowel letters 3 times in their notebook.

Tamil Intermediate:
This week, We did a small test on the first two sounds of the secondary letters. Most of the kids did well. The paper has come home for signing. Please review them and have them keep in the practice at home too. We worked on both writing and reading.
In writing, we practiced அ ,ஆ sound secondary letters. Kids who were comfortable with the first 2 sounds were taught the next 2 (இ ,ஈ ) sound. When they write we have them say the letters while writing. Please do the same while writing at home too. Otherwise, they just writing blindly without understanding the sounds.
In reading, Kids took home two sheets of small words and sentences made with the letters learnt so far. We tried our best to read the words by joining the letter sounds. Example: (அ - ம் - மா =அம்மா ) . Few kids got it quickly. We will be working on this reading skills in parallel to writing letters. We will continue to send in similar sheets as we learn more letters. This is mainly intended mainly for reading. Writing those words will be optional.
Homework:
Write the secondary letters 3 times in their Notebook. write for the (க் + அ =க... ) அ ,ஆ / இ ,ஈ sound . Each kid who came today will know which one to write. Kids who did not come today will write the அ ,ஆ sound secondary letters 3 times.
Every class will start with a small test of the secondary letters we learnt so far. So please have the children be prepared for it. We will be able to move further only after the kids they got comfortable with the letters.
We meet after the two weeks break.
Kids came to class with enthusiasm.
Tamil Junior:
Junior group had very little attendance this week. Since Vidya will be away in India for a while, Sivakumar will be handling the class. This week Junior class, we reviewed the past lessons and started learning the days of the weeks.
Homework:
Review and practice saying the days of the week in tamil. Kids will be asked to say the tamil day for the corresponding English days of the week.
Tamil Intermediate:
Intermediate kids came well prepared for the test.

Practice the Secondary letters learnt in the class. Kids who had little tough time in the test will have another opportunity to do the test again next week. Come prepared.
Tamil Class did their Assembly Presentation. Thank you for all the parents who helped the kids to practice the song and also bring them early in the morning for the practice. Kids did a wonderful job in the assembly. Every one appreciated their presentation. Children from Junior Tamil Sang a Vowel song and the kids from intermediate sang consonant song. Visvam and Megana said few words about Pongal as this will be pongal celebration.

Tamil Jr: In the Class, We practiced all the letters, Numbers, Colors. This week we started learning the week day names. Kids also did a worksheet on the Letter e. Homework: Please review the letters writing and other vocabulary done so far. There another 2 weeks break. It will be easy for the kids to forget if the lessons are not practiced in home. Some kids started the secondary letters with அ and ஆ sounds. All kids will have to write the consonant sounds with out seeing in the next class. Please practice them in the house. As a homework from previous class, kids were supposed to prepare couple of sentence to answer the following questions: who they are thankful in life and why?. They are did a good job in telling their answers. Then we had a story time where, I said a simple story about "Little Monster - Muthu" in tamil and kids translated it into English. Next class, this will be vise versa. I will say a story in English and kids will translate it into tamil. We will be working on this next few classes. Home work: Practice the consonant letters for writing test in the next class.Kids who started working on the secondary letters will be writing the secondary letters too. Today both and Jr. and intermediate class had a joined class for practice and the very low attendance in the Jr. class. Since all 2nd graders have to leave early for the biksha, we made a quick but very productive session. First both the level kids sang their respective song to be performed in the Assembly on Jan 24th. They all did a good job. From intermediate class, Star Student Keerthana brought a Teddy bear toy and talked about it. She did a very good job telling us , where she go and where did she buy the toy. What is its name etc all in Tamil. Great Job Keerthana. There is good response to the show and tell in the class. try that in the house too. Ask the children to say a few words in tamil about one of their toy. They like to talk to talk about their favorite subject. In Junior class, Anusri and her brother said the "thirukkural". It was very nice of her to say with perfect pronunciation. Excellent work Anushri. If your child has any special quality that they can show in Tamil, (like talk about their artwork, tamil song, rhyme, talk about a topic, poem recital...) let us know. We will motivate them in the class by giving opportunity for the presentation. Jr. kids worked on the songs, practiced their numbers after that. In the intermediate group, kids wrote the consonant sounds. Children who finished all the 6 were taught the next 6, one who finished 12 were taught the last 6, and the one who finished the 18 were taught the secondary letters. Some kids who were interested in drawing, were asked to draw a picture representing pongal and made to write "பொங்கல் வாழ்த்துக்கள் ". Today kids were in good spirit and did everything nicely. Good job kids.
Home work: January is a "Thank you Month". So next class each kid has to come with answer to the following question. நீங்கள் யாருக்கு நன்றி சொல்வீர்கள் ?ஏன்? (Who you are thankful for and why?)
